Circumstances of Death

George is listed as dying for the effects of heat on 24th August 1916. The 9th Battalion war diary does not contain any information as to when George was taken ill, at the time of his death the Battalion was in training at Gomorrah, Iraq where they had been stationed since 28th June 1916. The war diary entries for the period 20th to 27th August are transcribed below. It is likely that George is the one OR who died.

Gomorrah - 20 Aug 1916: Battn out on a night march of 9 miles doing an attack on blockhouse line for training – returned to camp 7am.
