Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

During June 1916 the Battalion was based in trenches at Hannescamps, and its working parties were in the lines engaged in the prepartions for the Battle of the Somme on July 1st. The war diary the states that enemy 77mm artillery and 5.9in howitzer shells hit the working parties at Collingbourne Avenue and Trench 66. James was killed during the shelling.
