Circumstances of Death

Frederick is listed as being killed in action on 23rd July 1916. The 15th Battalion war diary entries for the period 22nd to 24th July are transcribed below.

Montauban - 22 Jul 1916: Battn in support as above.

Night of 22/23rd Orders received from Bde re attack onn east of High Wood. 15th R War Regt form details of Bde Reserve.

9.30pm: Battn took up position in old German trench S.16 a&b and later launched into front line to reinforce 1/R West Kent & 14th R War Regt. D Coy formed part of the actual attack going over the sap but lost heavily  owing to Machine Gun fire from High Wood & returned to original position.

Capt C A Bull; Capt R I Gough were both wounded.

Casualties 22/23rd: Killed Officers 1 & OR 13: Wounded Officers 5 & OR 90: Missing Officers 1 & OR 31.

Weather brighter.

Montauban - 23 Jul 1916: Disposition Half Battn as reinforcements & half as Sappers. Heavy shelling by enemy all day.

11pm: Relieved by 16th R War Regt – Casualties for relief as above.

Weather bright.

Montauban - 24 Jul 1916: On completion of relief of the previous night (11pm) the Brigade returned to Divisional Reserve at Pommiers Redoubt.

Fatigue work found as requested – long communications trench dug. Heavy shelling continually by enemy.
