Circumstances of Death

William is listed as being killed in action on 2nd January 1917. The 6th Battalion war diary entries for the period 1st to the 3rd January are transcribed below.

Les Boeufs - Jan 1st 1918: Battalion remained an extra day in the trenches, owing to the Divisional area being re-allotted Southwards. Enemy quiet except for usual intermittent shelling. Enemy trenches bombarded 12.10pm to 12.45pm. Enemy retaliation slight. Weather wet and windy. Trenches very bad with mud and water. No casualties.

Les Boeufs - Jan 2nd 1918: Battalion relieved in the evening by 22nd ANZACS. Rain & wind most of the day. Mud very bad.

Casualties: 4 killed, 1 officer 8 O.R. wounded, during relief, caused by shell fire

On completion of relief Battalion returned to Carnoy Camp. Cases of trench feet 6.

Carnoy - Jan 3rd 1918: Batt remained at Carnoy Camp in Divisional Reserve.
