Leonard is listed as being killed in action on the 27th July 1917. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the 26th to 28th July are transcribed below.

Ypres - 26th Jul 1917: Battalion moved to Halfway House at 10am. Casualties 4 OR wounded.

Halfway House - 27th July 1917: Still in dug outs at Halfway House. Weather very good. Casualties 1 killed and 5 wounded.

Battalion relieved 2nd Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment in line during evening. Line Menin Road to Zouave Wood.

Halfway House - 28th July 1917: Weather stormy. Enemy artillery active. Trenches badly damaged. Casualties 1 killed and 8 wounded.

Halfway House - 29th July 1917:Weather good, still in line. Inter company relief. Casualties 1 killed and 6 wounded.
