Rugby School Biography (Click here for Original)

SACHEVEREL DARWIN WILMOT was the second son of the Reverend Darwin Wilmot, V.D., Headmaster of Macclesfield School, and of Louisa Lilla Wilmot, of Castle Hill House, Kenilworth, and cousin of Sir Henry Wilmot, Bart V.C, K.C.B.

He entered the School in 1900 and left in 1902, when he passed into the R.M.A., Woolwich, receiving his Commission in the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1904.

He served abroad at Malta and in India,,and was at home on leave in the summer of 1914. On the outbreak of War he returned to India, and went to Mesopotamia in March, 1916. Here he acted as Adjutant, was at the capture of Baghdad, and in command of a Heavy Battery at the taking of Nedjef, At Nedjef the shooting had to be very accurate, to
avoid one of the most holy shrines of the Shiahs, and the Artillery were complimented on their accuracy by the Brigadier.

Captain Wilmot received the Serbian Order of the White Eagle (5th Class with Swords), in August, 1916, and was mentioned in General Maude's Despatches of August 15th, 1917, and in General Marshall's Despatches of November nth, 1918.

From Mesopotamia he was sent to the Staff School at Saugor, and did so well that, an intermediate step in promotion being omitted, he was appointed G.S.O. 2, and to be Brigade Major at Karachi. He was to have taken over his new duties on October 15th, but he contracted influenza and died at the Station Hospital, Karachi, October I4th, 1918 aged 33.

The General at Karachi wrote:- "Though he had been with us a short time only, I and all my Staff had got to like him very much."
