Circumstances of Death

John was part of 3rd Special Company, Royal Engineers. These companies were set up in 1915 as part of the Special Brigade, Royal Engineers following the use of Chemical Weapons by the German army in early 1915. The companies specialised in the release of Chemical Weapons towards enemy lines.

John died of pneumonia at the No. 56 General Hospital in Etaples after he had been accidentally gassed.
