Circumstances of Death

Frederick is listed as having died of wounds on 12 Jun 1917 at Dulman Prisoner of Camp War. Red Cross records [click here] show that he was taken prisoner on 4 Apr 1917 at Vimy Ridge suffering from a bullet wound.

All of Frederick's military records show him as being in the 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire's but the Battalion's war diary shows that on the 4th April 1917 they were training in a rest camp 40km away in Camblain-Châtelain and that they did not have any casualties until the 9th April and the first report of any men missing was on 11th April when they were in the lines at Athies which is about 16km south of Vimy.

His medal roll records that he also served with the 10th, 11th & 14th Battalions. The 14th Battalion took part in the Battle of Vimy Ridge and their war diary records them as being in action on Vimy Ridge on 9th April but again no casualties are recorded as missing between the 4th & 9th. The 11th Battalion were some 20km SE of Vimy at Warlus between the 1st and 9th April, again no men reported missing and they did not take part in any action near Vimy. The 10th Battalion were at that time stationed near Ypres and therefore not involved at Vimy.

Therefore we are unable to confirm exactly when, where and how Frederick was captured.
