From his service number, 2463, we believe that John enlisted between 7 Jan 1913 when #2253 was issued and 9 Jun 1914 when #2539 was issued.

Circumstances of Death

John is listed as being killed in action on 4 Feb 1915. The 1st Battalion war diary for that day is transcribed below.

4th February - St Yves: Artillery duels took place during most of the day. Unusual activity of aircraft both British and German. About 4.15pm hostile light guns shelled Boreen heavily. 1 killed, 4 wounded.

Major Lancaster returned from leave. Lieut Black went on leave. END
