John is listed as being killed in action on 4 Feb 1915. The 1st Battalion war diary for that day is transcribed below. 4th February - St Yves: Artillery duels took place during most of the day. Unusual activity of aircraft both British and German. About 4.15pm hostile light guns shelled Boreen heavily. 1 killed, 4 wounded. Major Lancaster returned from leave. Lieut Black went on leave.
