Circumstances of Death

John is listed as being killed in action on 30 Apr 1916. The Battalion war diary for that day is transcribed below, however it should be noted that the monthly Statement of Casualties for April 1916 does not list any men being killed or wounded but 4 other ranks are listed in the May Statement of Casualties as being killed on 1st May 1916.

30th April 1916 - Trenches - Monchy: Fine day, enemy aeroplane dropped 4 bombs on our trenches. Artillery on both sides fairly active. Rain in afternoon.

General Lambton and General Wilding go round our lines. Captain G.S. Miller and Sergt Bench returned from 3rd Army School of Instruction.

1st May 1916 - Trenches. Monchy: Beautiful sunny day. Enemy artillery very active, especially on salient, mostly 5.9s and Aeriel Torpedoes. Relieved at night by 13th K.R.R. Relief complete by 9.30pm. Battalion marched to St. Amand arrived there at 11-0pm. Capt The Rev. S.C. Waldergrave S.C.F, C of E joined the Battalion for attachment. END
