Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The battalion were in the trenches at Houplines from 1st Nov to 17th Nov and although there was no set battle or allied attack during that time the battalion was under daily artillery and sniper fire and on the day he died (13th) the war diary states that there was incessant rain and the discomfort being suffered was indescribable and that there were 4 casualties to shell fire. Given this information we are assuming that Charles was killed by shell fire.
