Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Oliver is listed as being killed in action on 1 Sep 1918 and the war diary from the period 31 Aug - 2 Sep is transcribed below.
 

Needle Wood near Bouchavenes - 31/1st Sep – 5.30am: Battalion attacked at 5.30am behind creeping barrage with 19th London on the left and 58 Division on right in an E.N.E direction, objective being trench system on west outskirts of Moislains Wood. Dispositions A Coy on left,  B Coy on right & C & D Coys in support. Objectives reached but casualties very heavy owing to stiff resistance of enemy machine gun nests and Captain R.S. Gain took charge of elements of all four companies and reorganised defence of objective. Touch was gained with 19th London who were entrenched 200 yards to our left rear with 58 Division on our right at noon half of HQ Coy went forward to strengthen front lines.

1st/2nd Sep: battalion took over frontline occupied by 173rd Infantry Brigade to C.10.c.8.0 to allow 24th London and 58th Division to form up for their attack at 5.30am with the object of encircling St. Pierre Vaast Wood. O.C. 47th M.G. Bn attached 4 machine guns to assist in the defence of this line. During evening battalion with rest of 141st Infantry Brigade withdrew to Hill 150 area in reserve. END
