Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The war diary shows that the 19th Division (57th Brigade) were in the trenches at Malplaquet when the Trench Mortar engaged, and destroyed, an enemy maching gun post. Malplaquet is a few kilometers from where Arthur is buried at Cross Roads Cemetery. Due to the way in which they were organised (click here) it is believed that this refers to the 19th (Division) Trench Mortar Battery. Although no mention is made of casualties it is thought that Arthur was killed during this engagement.
