Circumstances of Death

Clement's service record shows that he was wounded on 9 Jul 1917 when an enemy shell burst in the billets he was sharing. The 18th Battalion war diary entry for 9 Jul 1917 is transcribed below and does record the events that resulted in Clement being wounded.

Bovigny Wood 9th July 1917: Training during the morning. Postponed Church parade held. About midday (12.40pm) shell dropped by long range gun struck on of the billets in which HQ details and portion of D Coy were billeted. 5 OR's killed, 4 OR's died of wounds and 35 wounded.

By 12 Jul 1917 Clement had been admitted to University College Hospital, London having been evacuated from France aboard HMHS Princess Elizabeth. The medical notes in his file show that he was admitted with a very dirty wound in the right ankle and treatment to clean it started. However on 18 Jul 1917 Clement's temperature rose to 104.6 and on 19 Jul 1917 an examination of the wound was carried out under anesthetic and a pocket of puss was incised and drained. The next day his temperature had returned to normal and he was not in pain. He was said to be slightly bronchitic. However on 23 July 1917 Clement died of a secondary hemorrhage in the ankle.
