Military Service History
- Originally enlisted in Warwickshire Yeomanry on 23 Feb 1912 (Warwick Yeomanry Records)
- Mobilized at outbreak of war
- Arrived in Egypt 24 Apr 1915 aboard HMT Saturnia
- Invalided 26 Dec 1915,. most likely because of one of the many illness's circulating amongst British Troops in the Dardanelles and Middle East at that time.
- 30 Nov 1917 - Taken Prisoner at La Quesnoy during the Battle of Cambrai (Red Cross Records)
- 15 Jan 1918 - moved from La Quesnoy to Dulmen POW Camp, Germany
- 28 Apr 1918 - moved from Dulmen to Friedrichsfeld POW Camp, Germany

Circumstances Leading to Death
George survived the war but was taken prisoner on 30 Nov 1917 (Battle of Cambrai) and held prisoner until the Armistace in 1918 when he was released but had to walk back to allied held territory. His death certificate states that he died of "valvular disease of the heart through having Enteric Fever and Rheumatic Fever whilst in the army"| Personal & Family History |

George is buried at Carlby St. Stephen Churchyard (grave not found) and it appears that he had family connections there as there are at least five other people named Shorthouse, including both of his parents, who are buried there.
