Circumstances of Death
Charles is listed as being killed in action on 14th September 1914 during the Battle of the Aisne. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 13th to 15th September are transcribed below. The entries mention that the original reports attached to it were lost a month or so later and so the diary must have been reconstructed at some stage after 2nd November 1914. 13.9.1914 – Bazoches: Marched through Bourg to near Moullins (N of R. Aisne) and bivouaced about 11pm. 14.9.1914 – Battle of the Aisne: All detailed reports, orders etc were lost during period Oct 29th to Nov 2nd. The Battalion acted as advanced guard to the Division and was directed to move N over high ground between Vendresse and Paissy finally reaching and taking Cerny-en-Laonnois from which a retirement was ordered after dusk. The final position held being on the spurs running NE from Vendresse & Paissy. The Battalion was relieved and withdrew behind (S of) Vendresse during the night. Casualties: Killed 11 other ranks; wounded 10 Officers [including the CO Lt. Col Ponsonby] & 180 other ranks; missing 1 officer and 162 other ranks. 15.9.1914 – Vendresse: In reserve |
