Circumstances of Death

Arthur is listed as dying of wounds received in action at the 24th Field Ambulance on 11 Jan 1917. The war diary for the period 9th to 11th Jan 1917 is transcribed below, we believe that Arthur was wounded on the same day that he died but he may have been wounded on the 9th.

Manners Junction, near St. Jean, 9-1-1918: Same of 3.1.18 [working parties on Railway], also construction of spur 500ft long at Alina D.22.a.2.5. 2 casualties to working party. 1 O.R. of 260th Coy, R.E. G.S.W to thigh and 1 O.R 10th Lab Coy G.S.W to chest wounded in the vicinity of Alma.

Manners Junction, near St. Jean, 11-1-1918: Work same as 10-1-18, working party in vicinity of Alma Spur subjected to very heavy enemy shell fire for about 1/2 hour resulting in 11 Casualties. 3 killed & 4 wounded of 10th Labour Coy and 4 O.R. of 260th Rly Coy, R.E. wounded. END
