Frederick is listed as dying of wounds on 20 April 1918. The Battalion war diary lists him as being wounded on 25 Mar 1918 and the war diary entry for that day is transcribed below. 25th March 1918 - Villers Carbonell & Eterpigny: Relieved by 2 Middlesex about midnight 24/25. After relief withdrew to position on 90 Canton? W of Villers Carbonell. 8am: Received news that Eterpigny Bridge had been crossed and enemy had to be counter-attacked. 9.30am: C & A Coys under VCapt Cropper proceeded to attack, came under heavy M.G & rifle fire about 500 yards W of Eterpigny on the ridge and attack was smashed up. All Officers C Coy out of action. Position organisted to defend the ridge. Capt Warner in Command. B & D Coys moved up in close support and the position was held against severe odds all day. Troops were withdrawing on the left flank and withdrawal from the entire position was ordered to begin at 8.15pm. This was carried out successfully as far as Estrees. END |
