Circumstances of Death

Albert is listed as being killed in action on 25 Apr 1918. He was initially reported as Missing in Action and his remains were never found. His parents made two enquiries of the Red Cross to establish if he had been taken prisoner before his death was accepted as being on the 25th. The Battalion was diary entry for the 24th and 25th is transcribed below.

Front Lines - Cachy Area - 24th April 1918: Hostile barrage started about 4am of great intensity. About 6am the enemy attacked in great force but at first was repulsed with great loss. His use of Tanks however forced our troops to fall back a short distance but not before our fire had caused immense casualties to his infantry. His tanks again worked around to the rear of our position and a further withdrawal became necessary, the Bn eventually taking up a position in the Cachy Switch Line just E of Cachy and continuing in a line of shell holes close to the Cachy Hangers Road. Bn HQ remained in Quarry E of Cachy.

Front Lines - Cachy Area - 25th April 1918: Hostile shelling on this position very heavy espicially of BN HQ. During the night the Bn was relieved by Morrocan troops proceeding on relief to open country NE of Boves where it bivouacked for the night.

Relief completed at 12.50am [26th]. Casualties for 24th and 25th: Officers Officers Killed 1; Officers wounded 4; Officers missing 4. Other ranks killed 23; wounded 108 and missing 203.
