Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
Edgar was originally listed as missing in action on 10 Sep 1917 and he death was later accepted as being on that day. His remains were never recovered. The war diary for that day is transcribed below:
10th September 1917: Battalion paraded at 8.30am and marched to International Corner Station, detraining at Elverdinghe at 10.20am. Marched into Camp at Malakoff Farm Area. B.23.c.2.2. Paraded again at 9.30pm and marched up to Candle and Cancer Trenches, the old Boche main Second Line. Enemy shelling Pilcken Road with heavies. A Coy had 9 killed and 11 wounded and 10 missing believed wounded (Since reported killed) [including Edgar]. Relief complete at 2.00am.
