Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

A casualty list in the battalion war diary states that Francis was wounded in action on 28 Jun 1916 and his CWGC record shows that he died of those wounds on the same day. It is likely that he died at the 4th Casualty Clearing Station which was located at Beauval near to where he is buried. Click here for more information about the treatment of wounded soldiers.

The war diary for that day is very brief and is transcribed in full as follows:

Trenches at Hebuterne - 28-6-16: Fine day - a few showers. Raid on enemy trenches attempted at 2.30am held up by wire. Casualties 1 killed, 6 wounded, 4 slightly wounded at duty. Reinforcement draft of 31 join Battalion. END
