Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

George is listed as being killed in action on 26 Oct 1914. The war diary for that day is transcribed below.

26th October 1914: Stand to Arms 4.0 am and advance along the Menin - Beccabarre Road and occupied trenches about two miles down. Vacated trenches at 1.0pm and advanced in the direction of [empty space]. An English aeroplane was brought down by our own gunners and immediately came under heavy shell fire. Retired about half a mile but immediately advance again in the direction of [empty space] where Bn entrenched in the open. Retired to S Klein Zillebeke where Bn bivouaced for the night. END

  • Minnie married George Cobb in October 1885 with George dying in 1889 aged 23
  • Minnie then married Edward John Cyphus on 26 Dec 1892 1 year after George was born, Edward died in 1931
  • In 1911 Minnie Sheldon (aged 39) is living with Stephen Sheldon (aged 29) and Gladys Cyphus (aged 12) at 5 Jubilee Place Guildford St, Birmingham
