William is listed as being killed in action on 10 Jul 1916 at Carnoy during the Battle of the Somme. The extremely brief war diary entry for that day is transcribed below and it appears that William was the only man killed on 10 Jul 1916 near Carnoy, no details of how he was killed are given.
