Circumstances of Death
William is listed as being killed in action on 9th December 1915. The 6th Battalion war diary entries for the 6th, 7th & 8th December are transcribed below which indicate that William was killed whilst on a working party or during enemy shelling of Fleurbaix Billets Fleurbaix – 6th: Billets. HQ at Ferrets, Men clean up, equipment etx. Billets Fleurbaix – 7th: Enemy shelled Fluerbaix. Coy’s carry out smoke helmet drill, physical training etc. Signaling and bombing classes parade for instruction. Working party of 50 men found, for work at Croix Marechal. Casualties: 1 man killed, 2 men wounded. Billets Fleurbaix – 8th: Training same as yesterday. Working parties found for work at Convent Avenue and Watling Street. |
