Roland is listed as being killed in action on 30th May 1918. The 10th Battalion was diary entries for the period 29th to 31st May 1918 are transcribed below. Sarry - Wed 29.5.18: Battalion de-bussed at Chaulbrecy at 5am. Packs were dumped & Battalion moved to a position in Brigade Reserve at Sarcy. About 1pm Bn moved to a position near Lehery [to] Ville-en-Tardenois road. Night was quiet. Ville-en-Tardenois – Thur 30.5.18: Battalion engaged in fighting consequent on withdrawal of Worcesters & Gloucesters, occupying a position between these 2 units about 10am About 11am Battalion withdrew & took up a position on left flank of Brigade in front of Ville-en-Tardenois with left Coy (D) ? back to face Rumilly. A gap existed on the left of Bn which was later filled by 10 guns of the M.G.C. Battn heavily shelled. Ville-en-Tardenois – Fri 31.5.18: Heavily shelled, Battn compelled to withdraw about 11am under heavy barrage to position overlooking Ville-en-Tardenois – Chambrecy Road. 7pm: a further withdrawal of about 800 yards to a more favourable position necessary. |
