Arthur is listed as dying of wounds on 14th September 1918. It is not known on which day he was wounded but it was most likely during the operation on 11th & 12th September 1918. The 1st/8th Battalion war diary entries for the period 8th to 13th Septembrer are transcribed below. Hendecourt 8/10th.9.18: Active patrolling of enemy posts which were always found to be very alert with MG. activity both by day and night. Enemy artillery active especially at dawn. Several gas (Blue Cross) bombardments. Hendecourt – 11.9.18: In conjunction with flank troops an attack was made to establish our front line along the Canal du Nord. This was unsuccessful but on our right the village of Moeuvre was captured. Hendecourt -12.9.18: Counter attack on the village of Moeuvre. A full detailed report of the operations of these two days is attached [Not transcribed]. On the morning of the 12th Major JJ Jones MC assumed command of the Battn viz Lt Col Heath DSO who had been evacuated sick. Incay – 13.9.18: On the morning of the 13th Sept the relief of the Battn by the 1st Bn Royal Munster Fusiliers. The battalion withdrawing to positions in sheet 51.B. V.27.a south of Cagnicourt. |
