Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Charles is listed as being killed in action on Sunday 15th October 1916 however the war diary for that day states that the Battalion were in bivouacs at Corbie and training during the day, no mention is made of any enemy fire or casualties. The following day the battalion relieved the Royal Irish Fusilers in the support trenches at Flers, it is possible that Charles was killed during the relief although again no mention is made of casualties. The first day casualties are mentioned is overnight on the 17th/18th when the battalion assaulted, and it appears, captured enemy positions as Les Boeufs where they remained until the 19th. They suffered 261 killed, wounded or missing. We will leave it up to the reader to decide the details of Charles death, copies of the War Diary Pages are attached below (click to enlarge).

To add to the confusion the Budbrooke Plaque and his medal card state that he was in the King's Royal Rifle Corp. The War Diary for the 1st Bn KRRC states that they were not in the lines and that there were zero casualties between 7th and 18th of October so we have ruled out the possibility he was with them when he was killed.
