Circumstances of Death

Harvey is listed as being killed in action on 28th October 1918. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 27th to 29th October are transcribed below.

NB: The location of the 2nd Battalion in the war diary places them over 100km NW of where Harvey was buried in Pommereuil, a place where there was heavy fighting around the time that Harvey was killed. We assume that there has been some sort of error or that he had been attached to another Battalion.

Sunday 27th Oct 1918: Dull day, wet afternoon – fine by evening – General situation quiet. During the evening the Battalion was relieved by the 14th Argyle & Southern Highlanders and 1/6th Cheshire Regt.

Relief completed by about 9.30pm – Companies on relief withdraw to area about 1 mile north of Ruddervoorde.

Billeting in this area very difficult owing to the large numbers of Artillery units in the area. All ranks very much crowded.

Ruddervoorde - Monday 28th Oct 1918: Fine day, battalion at rest.

Ruddervoorde - Tuesday 29th Oct 1918: Fine day, no change in dispositions. Battalion at training. About 6pm enemy aeroplanes dropped a few bombs in vicinity of transport – no casualties.
