Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The war diary reveals that the Battalion were part of working parties who were hit by enemy shell fire and is transcribed below:Hannescamp. June 2:
Hostile 77 mm shells, H.E and shrapnel, fell about the rear works throughout the morning. Collingbourne Avenue and the SAP in trench 66 were shelled with 5.9 Hows from 5:00pm to 7:30pm.
6 casualties occurred, among them being Maj BH McGrath, 8th E Lancs thanks and Capt Hallett 125D RFA, both killed. New works were intermittently shelled during the night. Two 5.9 shells fell near Church End in Hannescamp. A groom and two horses were killed. Weather fine. Wind gentle SW. END
