Circumstances of Death

Richard is listed as being killed in action on 13th September 1914. The 2nd Battalion war diary entry for the 13th September is transcribed below, although no mention of casualties is made. Septmonts – 13 Sep 1914: Drew a short ration at 5am; supply wagon blocked some way outside from another days supplies being within a few miles of us, but inaccessible. Moved off at 7.30am to ridge N of Septmonts, Brigade being in Divisional Reserve, 11th Brigade across the River Aisne, 12th at Venizel. Fine day, about noon moved on to La Tuilerie (1 mile SW of Venizel) where Brigade remained under cover till dark. French reported in Soissons, 11th & 12th Brigades over river gaining position on ridge. About 8pm Brigade ordered to cross river at Venizel & assist 11th Brigade who were scattered out on the ridge N of Bucy-le-Long. The crossing was accomplished about 11pm. |
