Circumstances of Death

Alexander is listed as being killed in action on 6th January 1916. We know from his service record that he was a member of 7th Battalion, Canadian Infantry, on attachment to 2nd Field Coy, Canadian Engineers which was renamed 2nd Battalion, Canadian Engineers. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the 5th and 6th January 1916 are transcribed below, from them it is clear that Alexander was killed on the 5th January and buried on the 6th.

Romarin - 5 Jan 1916: Lt’s Featherstonaugh and Stock, C.E., report as Supernumerary Officers. Lt’s Featherstonaugh detailed to work with Lt. Chetwynd and Lt. Stock with Lt. McCuaig. O.C. Divisional Engineers here for a few minutes in the afternoon.

Lt. A.E. Evans, Brigade Wiring Officer, shot near Red Cottage – Trench 132 – and died a few minutes later.

Lt. Morgan in charge of Extra Wiring Party goes on leave and is replaced temporarily by Lt. McDonald, 10th Battalion.

Romarin - 6 Jan 1916: Dull and cloudy. Arranged with Major Haines, Acting C.O. 7th Battalion for the 7th Battalion to take charge of funeral of Lt. Evans. All his effects here are to turned over for the Adjutant, 7th Battalion, for proper disposal.

Major Irving interviews O.C. 10th Battalion regarding material etc. for minor operation to be carried out by that Battalion.

No 5525 Sapper W.F. White slightly wounded.
