Walter is listed as being killed in action on 28th August 1916 and is reported to have been killed by a shell while carrying a wounded man out of the firing line. However this does not tally with the Battalion war diary (transcribed below) which places them in a training camp on that day. La Gorgue – 27 VIII 1916: Church parade, battalion baths, 2 Officer & 7 OR went on sniping course. La Gorgue – 28 VIII 1916: Inspection of Coys by OC Coys. Training programme started. 4 Officers and 4 NCO’s on R.E. Course. Lieut Kirby returned to duty. 2/Lt’s Crombie & Sturrock, Coy Sergt Maj Marsh awarded the MC. B.G.C saw all Officers at 5.30pm La Gorgue – 29 VIII 1916: Route march by Coys. 1 Off, 7 OR left for Lewis Gun course. Rain stopped march in the morning. Heavy tropical shower in the later afternoon flooded this area. |
