John is listed as being killed in action on 2 Jul 1917. His CWGC record states that we was attached to the 15th [Infantry Brigade] Trench Mortar Battery from the 16th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment who were also in 15th Infantry Brigade. The 15th Brigade war diary entries for the period 1st July to 3rd July are transcribed below along with the Brigade's monthly casualty returns. Oppy Wood - 1.7.1917: Enemy artillery shelled our defences in the Oppy Sector heaving during the day. Two deserters of the 19th Bavaria Infantry Regiment surrendered to us in the early morning in Oppy Wood. Oppy Wood - 2.7.1917: Thick artillery activity was displayed on both sides. Our own and enemy aeroplanes were unusually busy. A Polish deserter of the 264th Reserve Infantry Regiment, 80th Reserve Division, surrendered to us in the early morning in Oppy Wood. Oppy Wood - 3.7.1917: Our artillery bombarded enemy defences heavily during the morning and afternoon shelling Fresnoy, Neuvireuil and Oppy. Enemy artillery was, on the whole, very active.
