Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

George is listed as being killed in action near Inverness Copse, which is NW of Gheluvelt and SE of Ypres on 1 Nov 1914. The battalion war diary for the period 31st Oct to 5th Nov 1914 is transcribed below. It is known that by the end of the Battle of Ypres the battalion was down to 1/4 of its original strength. The War Diary pages for the period 8th to 30th Nov 1914 are missing which may be indicative of the pressure the battalion was under.

Oct 31st 6am: The III Bde lines was heavily attacked during the night.

10.30am: The Welch Regt commenced retiring from their trenches on the barricade in Chezuvet. The Glouc Regt was now ordered to hold the line running N & S of Veldhoek and there collect every officer and man coming back.

12 Noon: The Welch and Queens were driven back as the enemy worked round both and their Battalions were ordered to reform in the rear of Gloucs Line. The Bde was now very scattered and during th afternoon the battalion entrenched themselves on both sides of the Veldhook Cross Road traversing? the wood 600x W of Gheluvelt church. The remnants of this line formed up on this line and despite very heavy and continuous German attacks this line was held by the Brigade till the evening of Nov 1st when the Brigade was relieved by the 1st Brigade to reorganise in Herenthage Wood. No casualty returns could be made out by Coys. List of Officer casualties.

Major Ingram took in command of the Regt and on Nov 1 Lt Halford took omn a/Adjt

Nov 1st - Nov 5th: The btn remained in Herenthage Wood being continually called upon to support the 1st Brigade and parts of the 7th Division on the Veldhoek Line. During this time the bttn was about 300 strong. In the counter supporting attack made on Nov 2nd Capt A McLeod was killed and 2/Lt R M Gragebrook was wounded. About 200 men arrived under Captain Pritchett but no record was kept as they ? went straight into action on arrival. Capt Blunt slightly wounded on Nov 2nd and away from the Btn for 4 days in the Regt dressing station at Ypres. END
