Circumstances of Death

Walter is listed as being accidentally killed by fumes from a brazier on 6th February 1916. The 18th Signal Company war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

Ribemont - 6 Feb 1916: Building new standings for horses and erecting shelters.

7am: No 43886 Sapper Treppass W.T. and No 43888 Sapper Roberts T. accidentally suffocated by fumes from a coke brazier in Signal Officeof 54th Brigade HQ. When discovered by Motor Cyclist D.R. Hill at 7am Treppass was found to be dead and artificial respiration had to be resorted to for some time before Sapper Roberts recovered consciousness. 

Courts of Enquiry held by 54th Brigade. Sapper Treppass was buried at Corbie in the part of the cemetery reserved for British Military purposes.
