George is listed as being killed in action on 25th November 1914. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 23rd to 26th November are transcribed below and show that George was killed by an enemy sniper. It should be noted that George's, brother Corp William Russell was wounded in the chest at the same time and will be, along with George, one of the eight casualties mentioned below. St. Yves – 23 Nov 1914: Sentries reported that they heard hostile transport moving south in front of our lines. Incessant sniping all day from all sides and very little shelling. 2 killed and 2 wounded. St. Yves – 24 Nov 1914: Incessant sniping all day, very little shell fire. 3 wounded St. Yves – 25 Nov 1914: Shelling more active near A Coy. Our Howitzers put very accurate fire on enemy’s trench opposite D Coy. No German aircraft has been seen for two days. 8 casualties, all sniped. St. Yves – 26 Nov 1914: Quiet night in front of us. Heavy firing on our left. Quiet day very little shelling. Relieved at 4.30pm by Dublin Fusiliers, relief carried out by 7pm. Battalion billeted at Point 63. |
