Cecil is listed as being killed in action on 11th October 1918. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 10th to 12th October are transcribed below. E of Queant-Drocourt Line – 10 Oct 1918: C & D Coys relieved in the front line by A & B Coys. Post pushed out further and contact with enemy maintained. Patrol encounters etc. E of Queant-Drocourt Line – 11 Oct 1918: At dawn (5.15am) this morning the 2nd Devons and 2nd Middx Regt attacked Queant-Drocourt line (Wotan Line) just N of Vitry-en-Artois on a front of 1000 yards. No resistance on the part of the enemy who had retired an hour or so previously. A few prisoners were captured and all objectives taken. About 20 casualties from our own barrage. 2nd W Yorks pushed on forward and established posts E of Queant-Drocourt line. 2/Lt’s Folkes and Williams wounded. E of Queant-Drocourt Line – 12 Oct 1918: In support holding Queant-Drocourt line. Excellent dug-out accommodation. Mines and booby-traps successfully removed. |
