George is listed as being killed in action on 8th October 1915. The very brief 1st/7th Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below and reveals that George was killed by shellfire. Foncquevillers - 08 Oct 1915: Another fine day. Battalion relieved 1/8 R War R in Foncquevillers trenches. Relief complete at 3.15pm. Enemy fired 9 200? Minenwerfer between 9 and 9.30pm on position in front end trench killing 4 and wounding 5 men. Killed: L/Cpl Warner, Pte's Mence, Wright and Birtwhistle. Wounded: Pte's Clarue, Lewis, Brady, Osborne & Nicholls. No other damage done. |
