Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
Arthur is listed as having been killed in action on 17 Sep 1917. The war diary for both the 16th and 17th of Sept is transcribed below:Shrewsbury Forest - 16 Sep 1917:- Fairly quiet day. Some gas shells over during the night. Casualties 3 OR killed 6 wounded. END
Shrewsbury Forest - 17 Sep 1917:- Relieved by Queens R.W. Surrey Regt in 8 posts on night, 21st K.R.R [King's Royal Rifle Corps] 2 posts and 18th K.R.R 3 posts on left. A & D Coys marched to bivouacs at Cottage Camp and B & C Coys to Spoil Bank. END
As can be seen above the battalion did not report any casualties on the 17th and it is possible that Arthur was one of the three men killed on the 16th.
