Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The CWGC website lists War diary states that John was killed on 1 May 1916, however the war diary specifically names him as being killed the day before on 30 Apr 1916. The war diary entry for both days is transcribed below:-Mazingarbe 30/4/16: Wiring in front if front line practically completed. Work impeded by hostile machine gun fire. Hot day with east wind. No hostile attack. Sgt 12425 BAILEY H wounded (thigh & arm) 12424 JOINER W wounded (leg severe) Pnr 12207 SPENDER F wounded (back) PNR 12415 THORNETT J.E killed. END
Mazingarbe 1/5/16: Much quieter today. Parties out wiring tonight. END
