Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
William is listed as being killed in action on 2nd July 1916 however the war diary indicates that it may have been late on the 1st when he was killed (remember that if there is any doubt about the date the CWGC uses the last date possible) - see below:
On 1st July 1916 the battalion were in the front lines in the Moated Grange Sector which is just north of Neuve Chapelle, the entry for the day states "Germans opened intense barrage of our front line and east end of main communication trench and placed a barrage on road in M.29.d. They attempted to raid but were driven off. Bombardment ceased 11.30pm. Trenches for 50 yards were obliterated & serious damage along the whole line".
On 2nd July 1916 the war diary states only "Quiet day generally"
