Circumstances of Death

Richard is listed as being killed in action on 3 Sep 1917. The 2nd/5th Battalion war diary entries for the period 1st to 4th September 1917 are transcribed below. They make no mention of any casualties.

Bank Farm – 1/9/17: Battn holding front line (Somme – Hill 35 area). Unsuccessful attempt by 1 Platoon of B Coy to rush Hill 35 at 4am. Unsuccessful attempt by 2 platoons of D Coy to rush Hill 35 at 11pm.

Bank Farm – 2/9/17: Battn relieved in front line by 2/6th Warwicks. Relief complete at 12 midnight. Battn moved back into right support at Wieltje.

Wieltje – 3/9/17: Battn in right support

Wieltje – 4/9/17: Battn in right support
