Walter is listed as being killed in action on 20 Oct 1918. The war diary for the day is transcribed below:
 
Trenches [Havrincourt Wood] 20th: A Coy carried out 2 useful patrols but did not obtain a prisoner. 1 OR killed & 3 OR wounded in the line. 2 OR & 2 water cart horses killed on the water point nof NEUVILLE. At night the Bde is relieved. Battn is relieved by 1st D.C.L.I & withdraws into Rest Billets at HAPLINCOURT arrived there during early morning of 21st inst. During this time in the trenches [14th to 21st Oct 1918] Bn suffered 2 officers and 55 OR casualties. 3 hot meals a day were sent up to all Coys in trenches. END
