Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

On the 21st August the 2/4th moved into position in front line trenches near the Nieuewbeek Canal SE of St. Julien in readiness to carry out an attack the following day with the objective to capture German positions at Pond Farm which was 900 yards from their position and was eventually achieved at the second attempt after the first was repelled by heavy machine gun fire. The battalion suffered casualties of over 150 killed, wounded and missing.
