Other Information

Army pension records show that Arthur Underhill of Bishops Tachbrook was discharged from the Grenadier Guards on 17 Mar 1917 with gunshot wounds to the head and face and blindness in his right eye and he died in Warneford Hospital on 30 Sep 1923. A newspaper report on the 5th October 1923 states that Arthur had been carrying pieces shrapnel in his head for 6 years, one came out while he was shaving. He suffered from severe headaches and eventually the abscess on his brain caused by the wounds became too large and he died. After he was discharged from the army Arthur became a platelayer on the LM&S Railway. Click here for the newspaper cutting.
