Edgar is listed as dying of wounds on 24th January 1917, most likely at one of the many Casualty Clearing Stations that used Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery for their burials. The 1st/8th (Post Office Rifles) Battalion war diary entries for the period 20th to 25th January suggest that Edgar was originally wounded on the 20th or 23rd January. Railway Dugouts – 20 Jan 1917: Battalion remained in support. 1 OR wounded Railway Dugouts – 21 Jan 1917: Battalion remained in support Railway Dugouts – 22 Jan 1917: Battalion relieved 7th London Regiment on night 22/23rd. 1 O.R. killed. Hill 60 – Right Sector – 23 Jan 1917: Battalion remained in sector. Second day of bombardment of enemy front line system. Five minutes intense at 9.30am & deliberate during the day. Enemy retaliation comparatively slight and generally on left Coy. 2/Lt Will wounded; Sgt Allen killed; C.S.M. Cannon and 7 other ranks wounded. 23rd Division raided enemy trenches on our right at 9.30pm Hill 60 – Right Sector – 24 Jan 1917: Battalion remained in sector Hill 60 – Right Sector – 25 Jan 1917: Battalion remained in sector. Draft of 36 other ranks ‘trained’ received. |
