Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

On the day Edward is listed as being killed,  1 Dec 1917, the Battalion were in the front lines directly east of Monchy-le-Preux and directly west of Boiry-Notre-Dame. The battalion war diary entry for the day is as follows: "Enemy shelled periodically during the day. Front line was evacuated at 7pm for Gas Bombardment of enemy's front system by Special Stokes Mortars. Fairly quiet night"
