Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
|
Aubrey is listed as being killed in action on 4th November 1914. The 1st Battalion war diary entry for the 4th is transcribed below and is self-explanatory. Veldhoek - 4.11.1914: Heavy rifle and artillery fire about 10am inflicted several casualties. Capt. Slade called up reinforcements for our right about noon. Lt Iles was sent down there reinforcements & to report the situation to Major Carter who then came up to the trenches to see for himself. On his round he wounded by a bullet and then struck a second time by a shrapnel bullet & killed. Earlier in the day Capt. & Adj Allen was wounded by a shrapnel which burst in HQ. I think this is the heaviest shrapnel & other artillery fire we have as yet to put up with since the commencement of the war. The bearing of the NCO’s and men of the Regt was worthy of all praise. Total Casualties out of 250 men in the trenches was 15 killed & 35 wounded. We were relieved at dusk by the Gloster Regt and bivouced the night E of Hooge and south of the Menin Road. Officers present – Capt. Pearce, Capt. Slade, Lt Hynds & Lt Iles. |
