Other Information

Although George enlisted in Dec 1915 he was placed in the Army Reserve and was not mobilized until 7 May 1917.

Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

George is listed as being killed in action on 26th October 1917. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 25th to 27th October are transcribed below.

Irish Farm – 25.10.1917: Operation order No 91 issued. Battalion proceeded into line pm and took up position for attack.

Front Line – 26.10.1917: 5.40am Battalion attacked enemy’s position opposite its front, in conjunction with other Battalions of the 188th Infantry Brigade. Objectives gained & consolidated.

Casualties: 7 officers and 301 OR’s

Front Line – 27.10.1917: Battalion consolidating position gained and relieved PM by Hawke Battalion and proceeded [back] to Irish Farm.


NB: The Operational Order 91 gives the map references for the objectives but not the start points. It is believed that George was killed in the attack on Bray Farm which was part of the 1st objective - see map below. Click to enlarge
