Circumstances of Death
|
Reginald is listed as being killed in action on 24th November 1917. The 8th Battalion has proved to be virually impossible (to me anyway) to read. The following is taken from the CWGC website. On 21 November, the 8th Battalion occupied Barrier Trench, south of La Vacquerie, and then relieved the 9th Royal Fusiliers in the line near Bautouzelle. On 24 November the battalion attacked Pelican Trench. By 17 minutes after zero hour word was received that all objectives had been gained. About 15 minutes afterwards a very strong enemy counter-attack was launched and though the battalion frequently had to give ground, it held all its objectives except about 400 yards of Pelican Trench. The battalion captured about 25 prisoners and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy in the counter-attack. The battalion's casualties were one officer and 11 other ranks killed, and one officer and 43 other ranks wounded, with two other ranks missing believed killed. |
